Crocheted Net Bag

Here is a pattern for a cute net bag you could take to the beach, use as a produce bag at the grocery store, or use as a nautical theme handbag.

The size of this bag is just about right for a 5 lb bag of apples to fit comfortably.  If you want it larger like a tote size repeat the netted rows until you reach a desired height.

Difficulty: Beginner

Materials:
Crochet hook size 5.0 mm
~125 grams of cotton yarn
Stitch markers (optional)

Row 1:

Tie off your yarn with a slip knot to your Crochet hook leaving about a 2 inch tail, (this is chain 1). Chain 5 additional for a total of 6 chains.  Take your hook and connect the final chain with the first chain making a loop.  Tighten up your tail and curve the tail around your chained loop.

Row 2:

Chain 3 (This is double crochet (dc) 1). Ignoring the openings in the chained loop, make 11 more dc around the chained loop making sure to include the tail as you go. When you reach the end, connect the last dc to the first dc using a slip stitch (ss).

Row 3:

Chain 3 (This is double crochet (dc) 1). Using the openings in between your previous row, make 2 dc in each opening for a total of 24 double crochets.  When you reach the end, connect the last dc to the first dc using a slip stitch (ss).

Row 4:

Chain 3 (This is double crochet (dc) 1). Using the openings in between your previous row, make 2 dc in each opening for a total of 48 double crochets.  When you reach the end, connect the last dc to the first dc using a slip stitch (ss).

Congrats! You just made the bottom of your bag! Now for the netting part.

Row 5:

Chain 7, skip one dc opening, ss, chain 7, skip one dc opening, ss, repeat till you come back round again. You should have 23 little triangles sticking out from the bottom of the bag.  To move to the next row comes the unglamorous part.  Chain 7 and ss into the 4th chain stitch of the first triangle.

Row 6-14+:

Chain 7 and ss into the 4th chain stitch (or about the middle) of the next triangle. Keep on going around until you reach your desired height, mine was 14 rows.

Handle:

When you are ready to start crocheting the handle you will need to create a straight row to start your handle.

Row 1:

Chain 3 and ss into the 4th chain stitch (or about the middle) of the next triangle. When you reach the last triangle from the beginning of the row, start row 2.

Row 2:

Chain 2 & make 3 dc between each triangle till the end of the row

Row 3 & 4:

dc into the previous row all the way around

Row 5:

Before you start crocheting your 4th row, take a look at your project and fold the handle in 1/2. To make a hole for your hand, mark off a section of 15 stitches from each side.  Instead of dc into those holes you will be chaining 15 then continuing to dc the rest of the work.

Row 6:

dc all around. When you get to the chained area crochet 15 dc and spread them out along the chain with your fingers.

Row 7:

dc all around except for the last 5 stitches. Crochet 5 single crochets (sc) for the last 5 stitches, tie off and weave in your ends.
